Verizon is buying most of Yahoo! for $4.83 billion. Microsoft almost bought them in 2008 for $45 billion. Needless to say, they have been struggling. It is not known yet what parts of It will be shut down, what parts will be combined with other current technologies and what might stay as is. While I have a Yahoo account, I seldom use the email. I belong to a few yahoo groups, but most of them switched over to Google groups years ago.
My biggest concern personally is Flickr. I have over 6,000 photos & several videos stored there, many for sharing. If they shutter that service, I will need to download all 6000 to be sure that I have copies.
There is a complete list of all of the Yahoo services and which are included in the sale at this Slate website.
As long as I am wondering, what will happen to yahoo mail? Verizon had its own email service but switched earlier this year to its newly acquired AOL mail. Will it switch again, or switch all Yahoo mail to AOL? I think that some of the big names were utilizing Yahoo’s search as the engine that drove their own branded searches. If they still are, we might see some other effects of the sale. Although I am not a Verizon customer, I will be affected by the Yahoo services that I use.
